About the #ForTheHope Podcast

#ForTheHope’s Daily Audio Bible is (crazy idea!) a daily audio Bible reading. But it’s not just a voice — you can go anywhere and hear a better voice just read the actual text. We read through the New Testament in about 10 months and the Old Testament in about 14 months with a passion for just keepin’ it real, having conversations like normal people, and living out the love of Jesus better every single day.

Also showing up in your stream when you subscribe via Apple,  Spotify, or your favorite podcast software are occasional (and separate) #AlwaysBe segments for nurturing our spiritual formation and #AlwaysBeReady segments that help you take “a ministry of showing up” to work and culture.

About Roger Courville, CSP

Roger Courville, CSP is an award-winning speaker, award-winning author, and a passionately bad guitarist. He holds a Master’s in Christian Apologetics from Talbot School of Theology (Biola University) and is now working on his Doctorate in Ministry in Spiritual Formation at Denver Seminary. And…all that blah blah blah means nothing if he doesn’t help you fall more in love with Jesus and the people in Jesus’ world. If we do not have sacrificial love (1 Co 13, Ro 12), we’ve got nothing.

We read through the New Testament in about 10 months and the Old Testament in about 14 months with a passion for just keepin’ it real, having conversations like normal people, and living out the love of Jesus better every single day. The Bible read-through happens Monday through Saturday; Sundays have short “Reflections.”

We also publish, on most weekdays, #ForTheHope’s short #AlwaysBeReady segment where we explore an idea that helps us connect Sunday morning to Monday morning. You have to subscribe via a podcast software like Apple, Google, or Spotify to get them, but you can find examples here and here.

BE the reminder?

What might it mean to BE the reminder?

Young Timothy was a bit worried about his age. And perhaps understandably so, because here in 2021 we don’t have a monopoly on people inappropriately dismissing other people who are different in age, race, and other categories. And if anything, first century Israel was even more guilty of thinking that gray hair entitled you to be the only “wise” voice in the conversation.

Paul, Timothy’s mentor, en-courage-d him otherwise, including in a couple letters that we still read in our New Testaments today. Not only was Timothy to be an unashamed workman in the faith, he was to actively refute heretical teaching and teachers (2 Ti 2:14-19).

The letter may have been written to Timothy, but God preserved it for us. Interestingly, one of Paul’s points is wrapped up in the context of the word “remind.” When he says “Remind them of these things…” (2 Ti 2:14a, CSB), the imperative is ongoing, as in “keep reminding” them.

It’s almost like God knew in advance that we’d be forgetful, that we’re wired to “use it or lose it.” We need to be reminded of His goodness, truth, and beauty, but part of living in community includes the charge that we are also to be doing the reminding.

As the writer of Hebrews put it, “…let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching." (He 10:24–25, CSB). To be sure, we all like meeting in person, but being a reminder isn’t limited by proximity in today’s world.

So here’s a reminder: How are you making sure that you get reminded? Whether it’s Follower of One’s daily encouragement or one of many daily audio Bibles, putting on your own oxygen mask is likely the most powerful step you can take in making sure that you’re ready in heart and mind to be that reminder for someone else.

You, me, vicars of large things

I Was Vicar of Large Things by R.S. Thomas

Sometimes truths you already know are expressed in ways that are exhilaratingly new to you. So it is with a poem I just discovered, and this which I’ve received I pass along to you.

I Was Vicar of Large Things

I was vicar of large things
in a small parish. Small-minded
I will not say, there were depths
in some of them I shrank back
from, wells that the word “God”
fell into and died away,
and for all I know is still
falling. Who goes for water
to such must prepare for a long
wait. Their eyes looked at me
and were the remains of flowers
on an old grave. I was there,
I felt, to blow on ashes
that were too long cold. Often
when I thought they were about
to unbar to me, the draught
out of their empty places
came whistling so that I wrapped
myself in the heavier clothing
of my calling, speaking of light and love
in the thickening shadows of their kitchens.

~R. S. Thomas

If trust in organized religion is low, now what?

Most of us aren’t called to fight PR wars. Indeed, we don’t have to.

In 1975, Americans’ trust in “the church or organized religion” as at 68%. In 2019, that number was 36%. The study’s authors speculate that a variety of scandals involving everything from televangelists to Catholic priests is to blame.

Of course, we must remember that The Enemy has a rather brilliant PR department. He must, given that Jesus is the only perfectly trustworthy person that ever graced the planet.

Most of us work side by side with colleagues in secular workplaces. Put another way, most of us aren’t in places where we influence mass media or wield big platforms wherefrom to proclaim the truth.

And I’d argue most of us shouldn’t try.

Rather, even as messages of truth are dismissed, lifestyles of trustworthiness are hard to argue against. As Paul puts it,

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. (Ga 5:22–23, CSB)

What will happen is that people will wonder why you’re different, why you don’t spend time complaining the way others in their lives do, why you have joy despite the world being a mess. And that will create cognitive dissonance for them as they experience the reality of Jesus in and through you.

None of this is new. Remember Nero (falsely) blaming Christians for Rome burning?

Let them say what they want. Just make sure the people you know experience something different.
